Prayer Power: The Power of Prayer

The power of prayer is found when Heaven invades Earth. When we pray in unity with God’s will, His heavenly Kingdom is established on Earth.

Luke 11:9–13 (NLT)
And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You fathers – if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

His will is only to be realized through the prayers of those who belong to Him: the prayers of believers are to accomplish His will. Watchman Nee (Let Us Pray)

Prayer is for everyone. It is not relegated to those who have the “gift” for prayer or intercession, it is for every child of God. It is connected to our very purpose and the purpose of the Ekklesia.

2 Chronicles 7:14,15 (NLT)
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to every prayer made in this place.

Humility is the act of choosing someone else’s will as above, or better than, our own. In the context of prayer, humility is when we let God know that His will, His ways, and His thoughts, are better than ours.

1. Prayer that begins with humility prepares our hearts to receive God’s will.

Matthew 5:3 (NLT)
God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Acts 2:1–4 (NLT)
On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place.  Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.  Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Acts 1:8 (NLT)
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

δύναμις (dynamis). n. fem. power, deed of power. Literally, it describes the ability to perform an activity; by extension, it refers to someone in a position of power or the force of a person’s action.\

The baptism of the Holy Spirit empowers you to know and accomplish God’s purposes on the earth!

Acts 1:14 (NLT)
They all met together and were constantly united in prayer…

προσευχή (proseuchē). n. fem. prayer, place of prayer. What a person prays; subject of prayer; place of prayer.

2. When we pray, Holy Spirit is actively working to transform our minds to know God’s will.

Romans 12:2 (NLT)
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

1 John 5:14,15 (NLT)
And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

Matthew 18:18–20 (AMP)
I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth shall have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth shall have [already] been loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, that if two believers on earth agree [that is, are of one mind, in harmony] about anything that they ask [within the will of God], it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in My name [meeting together as My followers], I am there among them.

  • Bind / Tie – represents supernatural binding; to chain yourself to; to tie yourself to Christ.
  • Loose / Untie – to loosen the tie of satan; to free (i.e., Jesus loosed us from sin by his blood)

Agree: sumphōnéō; be in agreement with. To be in unison, accord, to speak together with another, thus to agree.

Praying in agreement with others releases the power and presence of God.

They cannot fail to go to heaven, for it is from heaven that they came; they are only going home. Charles Spurgeon

3. When we pray in unity with God’s will, His Kingdom is established on Earth.

Reasons for unanswered prayers:

  • We are praying out of God’s will.
  • We are praying unscriptural prayers.
  • We have not dealt with our own issues first.
  • We are praying out of God’s timing.

Romans 5:3–5 (NLT)
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
